NewsBeat, March 2023

Thank you for your ongoing support of our store! We hope you are well and happy wherever you are in the world. Moving forward, this newsletter will be monthly information on events and new arrivals in the store, but this one may be a bit more. We want to get you up to speed with how things have been going since we opened our new location in June and what to expect in the coming months.

We are just three months from the anniversary of our grand opening at our new location in downtown Ann Arbor. It has been a huge undertaking, and the ongoing efforts to create a community gathering space for any and all writers, artists, and creators to join in like-minded discussions and activities. Since opening, we have hired on a new Office Manager after the retirement of our previous, Karen McIntyre. She was the right-hand of owner Arthur Nusbaum for over 25 years through many business ventures. After shadowing Karen for about 2 months, Rachel Braum became our full-time Office Manager in September (hi, that’s me). Curating alongside our head curator, owner, and president, Arthur, is our vice president Joe Provenzano. The duo evaluate and describe all new arrivals before they are posted on the site or displayed in store. We have high standards, and it shows in the quality and rarity of items offered. Our store associates Wes and Eli round out our store’s small team, and they always enjoy a good discussion about poetry or science fiction. Together we host events and book clubs every month in the hopes of reaching more and more of our community. We’ve held book clubs discussing The Road by Cormac McCarthy, Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann, and The Passenger by Cormac McCarthy. Our associate Wes leads stimulating discussions about the themes of and reactions to the story, and we’re always welcoming more voices to the conversation. Our event schedule has been filling up quickly. You can always find our event listings on our Facebook page, the Destination Ann Arbor Event Calendar, or on the Ann Arbor Observer Event Calendar. We are about to host our 10th installment of our Live at TMB! Open Mic Night series. These happen on the 2nd Saturday of every month, so join us on March 11th for performances of poetry, prose, and music. On February 25th we held our first Movie Night watching Alfred Hitchcock’s groundbreaking horror film Psycho (1960) based on Robert Bloch’s novel of the same name. On March 25th, we will be watching The Day of the Locust (1975) based on Nathanael West’s novel of the same name.
